{"id":36,"date":"2007-02-02T10:00:10","date_gmt":"2007-02-02T08:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.zagura.ro\/?p=36"},"modified":"2007-03-03T16:08:36","modified_gmt":"2007-03-03T14:08:36","slug":"gentoo-on-ibm-thinkpad-385xd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zagura.com\/blog\/index.php\/2007\/02\/02\/gentoo-on-ibm-thinkpad-385xd\/","title":{"rendered":"Gentoo on IBM ThinkPad 385XD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another birthday present was a laptop IBM ThinkPad 385XD upgraded to 96MB of RAM and 10GB HDD.<\/p>\n<p>It came with Windows 2000 preinstalled but I already build a Gentoo image on my desktop for it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zagura.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/02\/thinkpad380.jpg\" title=\"ThinkPad385XD\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.zagura.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/02\/thinkpad380.jpg\" alt=\"ThinkPad385XD\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Due to the fact that it has a quite slow CPU and only 96 MB of RAM, I was thinking to use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xfce.org\/\">xfce<\/a> as Desktop Manager. Then I thought that I should also try <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kde.org\">KDE<\/a> because I had nothing to lose (except a few hours of compilation time on my desktop machine). So I emerged them both.<\/p>\n<p>The conclusion is that KDE works like a charm on this machine. The whole system runs quite smoothly. I use <a href=\"http:\/\/distcc.samba.org\/\">distcc<\/a> in combination with the x86 chroot of my desktop machine to emerge the new packages.<\/p>\n<p>I had no problem to get a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surecom-net.com\/pd-wireless-9428-g.htm\">Surecom<\/a>  cardbus wifi card working with it using the <a href=\"http:\/\/rt2x00.serialmonkey.com\">rt2x00<\/a> driver provided by Gentoo.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another birthday present was a laptop IBM ThinkPad 385XD upgraded to 96MB of RAM and 10GB HDD.
